Let Your Growth Show.

Put the faith you profess into the life you practice.

Fruitfulness of Wisdom
2 Peter 1:1–11 • With Pastor A

Pastor A’s Nugget

Growth becomes visible in how you treat people when there is no audience.

What we’re learning

Recognize God’s provision and choose a concrete practice that nurtures Christian character.

Golden Text • 2 Peter 1:3 • NKJV

“as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,”

What makes the Golden Text golden? God’s provision comes before the command to grow. We pursue a fruitful life through His power and promises, not through self-sufficiency.

Read the lesson Scripture

2 Peter 1:1–11

Use your Bible or open the full passage above. The reading guide below summarizes each movement of the text.

Receive God’s provision • verses 1–4

Faith and righteousness are grounded in Christ. God gives power and promises that enable a new way of life. Sharing in the divine nature concerns participation in His life and holiness; believers do not become gods.

Cultivate Christian character • verses 5–7

Actively develop the qualities that belong to faith. The list describes interconnected growth rather than a ladder that must be finished one rung at a time.

Live fruitfully • verses 8–11

Increasing character bears fruit in the knowledge of Christ. Forgetfulness obscures the grace already received. Diligence expresses a calling that is being lived out.

Understand the setting

Who

The letter identifies its writer as Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, addressing those who share a precious faith.

When

The lesson book follows the traditional setting around AD 63–64. Authorship and dating are debated in scholarship; the letter itself does not supply a calendar date.

Where

The lesson book suggests Rome as the place of writing; that location is not specified in this passage.

Why

To encourage believers to grow in knowledge of Christ and show the reality of their calling through a fruitful life.

Background and context

Peter begins with shared faith, grace, and peace, then describes God’s provision for godliness. The instruction to make every effort rests on that provision. Christian growth includes goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, affection, and love.

Vocabulary and original-language nugget
Godliness
A life of reverence and devotion expressed in conduct.
Diligence
Intentional, sustained effort.
Self-control
Bringing desires and reactions under wise direction.
Brotherly kindness
Affection and care within the family of faith.

Greek word nugget: epignōsis (ἐπίγνωσις), knowledge or recognition, appears in 2 Peter 1:2–3 and 8. In this context, knowledge of Christ belongs with a transformed and fruitful life.

Scripture connections

John 15:4–5 — remain in Christ to bear fruit; Galatians 5:22–23 — the Spirit’s fruit; Philippians 2:12–13 — active obedience with God at work within; Ephesians 4:22–24 — a renewed way of life.

Keep the meaning clear

Spiritual effort does not purchase salvation. Peter grounds growth in God’s prior provision. Fruitfulness includes character and love, not simply a busy schedule, a public title, or impressive ministry numbers.

Bring it into everyday life

A person can know many verses and still react harshly. Choose one ordinary moment—traffic, a disagreement, a delay—as a place to practice self-control, perseverance, and love.

Try this together

The growth check: choose one quality from verses 5–7. Describe what it would look like at home, at work, and at church. Select one practice and one trusted person who can encourage your follow-through.

A word for your week

As this month closes, look for fruit rather than applause. Are you becoming more patient? More dependable? Quicker to show kindness? God has not left you to build a godly life with empty hands. His power and promises support your obedience. Choose one area of growth and practice it in the next ordinary encounter. Small acts of faithful love matter.

Let’s pray

Jesus, thank You for providing what I need for life and godliness. Grow Your character in me and help me live out my faith with diligence and love. Amen.
